"True healing will always begin with your thoughts.  Master your thoughts and you will master your life."

~April Peerless

Energy Psychology is an umbrella term used to categorize a collection of psychology modalities which take a mind-body approach for understanding and improving the way a human functions.  By focusing on the relationship between thoughts, emotions, sensations, behaviors, and known bioenergy systems Energy Psychology promotes the notion of a field of energy in the human body that can be manipulated, charged, or altered to promote healing.  Bioenergy systems are comprised of meridians and the biofield. While misaligned or blocked energy might not show up immediately, symptoms develop soon after a traumatic incident and can range from phantom pain to more complex and powerful emotional responses and disorders. Energy Psychology seeks to restore balance to a person’s energetic system to optimize health and well-being.

The Reiki Warrior is certified in two Energy Psychology modalities that involve tapping on the meridian points.  The purpose of both methods is to overcome negative thoughts and traumatic memories.

What is Energy Psychology

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) came first and was developed by Roger Callahan after he discovered innovative applications of kinesiology and meridian therapies.  Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) was developed by Gary Craig after studying extensively under Roger Callahan.  Both TFT and EFT involve tapping on specific points on the body while focusing attention on a specific emotion or problem.

Thought Field Therapy Center states, “Fundamentally, Emotional Freedom Techniques is a “one size fits all” approach to managing traumatic memories, triggers, and negative emotions, while TFT is a more customized approach that gives you the ability to really focus in on specific emotions and triggers when you need to. EFT promises a “simplified version” of Roger Callahan’s TFT techniques; however, we have learned over years and years of using TFT algorithms that there truly are certain sequences and tapping points that are more effective for finding relief and freedom in each category of problem.”

While EFT has become more widely practiced throughout the world, TFT is the only tapping therapy that has been rated as effective and validated by the (NREPP) National Repertory of Evidence Based Practices and Procedures, (a division of SAMHSA in the United States) as an evidence-based treatment.

Tapping is a powerful, holistic healing technique based on the recognition that many states of emotional or physical distress such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain are often conditioned responses in the subconscious mind.  Tapping is a simple and effective treatment that can be used in physical, emotional, and psychological conditions to help neutralize and stabilize your current state of mind, a past trauma, or a future event.  Tapping breaks the current neuro pathway (mental pattern or connection) between the original traumatic event and the habitual or conditioned stress state that is currently being activated.

Tapping works by using the meridian system – this is the invisible energy pathway used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine; particularly in acupuncture. Whereas an acupuncturist would insert a needle, with EFT and TFT you simply ‘tap’ the same spots. These pathways work like a circuit flowing and conducting energy throughout the body. It might be helpful to think of the meridians as ‘emotional highways’ or roads. If there’s a crash on a road, it creates a blockage and traffic cannot flow.  In the same way, trauma, anxiety, or limiting beliefs can cause a blockage in your meridians. This action prevents energy from flowing causing an emotional imbalance, physical distress, and/or illness.  You can perform EFT or TFT on yourself, any time of the day with no harmful side effects.  Tapping with the fingertips on specific meridian endpoints of the body while focusing on specific emotions or physical sensations helps to calm the nervous system, rewire the brain to respond in healthier ways, and restore the body to a natural balanced state.

EFT has been used to effectively treat war veterans and active military with PTSD.  In a 2013 Study Trusted Source, researchers considered the impact of EFT tapping on veterans with PTSD against those receiving standard care. Within a month, participants receiving EFT coaching sessions had significantly reduced their psychological stress. In addition, more than half of the EFT test group no longer fit the criteria for PTSD.
